Southgate is a neighborhood so close to Rice Univeristy and the Texas Medical Center, that most residents can walk to either place. Roberts Elementary is an HISD fine arts magnet school, as well as an IB Primary Years school. The internationally diverse neighborhood is celebrated each year at the school. Original homes in this neighborhood were built in the 1930's, but there has been a lot of new construction in the last 20 years. There is an interesting mix of old and new, contemporary, craftsman, Georgian, etc., which makes this an interesting place to walk, bike, and get to know the neighbors. Nearby at Rice, there is a 3-mile walking/running trail around the boundary of the campus. On Tuesday afternoons, there is a Farmers' Market in the Rice parking lot on University Blvd. Residents can walk or bike to shopping and dining in Rice Village, enjoy football and baseball games at Rice, or a free recital or concert at Shepherd School of Music. This is a dynamic neighborhood; you should picture yourself home in Southgate!
